So preparing will be pretty close in difficulty, and for me there were plenty of times I wanted to give up. The only difference in the PPL checkride is the night flight requirement and simulated instrument test. I used PPL study materials as well since the tests are so similar. Somehow I only got one question wrong and passed with a 98%. If you're on a budget and are comfortable learning from books, I purchased about half of the Gleim SPL study books and read them on my own. Going in on an experimental (not all are well-maintained, beware) is a good way to find something more affordable than a $150k sport cruiser I joined a club with an RV-12 and a Rans S-20. Don't listen to them and don't let them take your avenue to flying away. So if you're thinking you can't be a capable pilot without that medical, SPL actually gives you quite a lot of freedom and you should definitely pursue it rather than not fly at all! There will be a lot of naysayers who tell you anything less than PPL is not worth it. ![]() And that will be an increasing amount of people my age (20s) as a lot of us were prescribed antidepressants/stimulants when we were kids, even if we don't currently take them. SPL is a perfectly valid alternative to PPL if you have reason to believe you can't qualify for a medical.
